Traditionally, before the 20th century, marriage was never about "love" but ensuring financial stability and security for women and a source of children (often for labor purposes) and respect for men. It was often expected that romance would come after the marriage itself in most cases.

In societies that practiced arranged marriage and still do, it was not that parents did not love their children, quite the contrary. They felt that they had a duty to set up a stable future for their children and felt that marriage was too important to base solely on romantic love alone, as romance was considered to be very fickle and unreliable.

Now, granted, there are different forms of arranged marriage. Some cultures have the parents pick the suitor with no input from their children, while others draw up a shortlist of suitable candidates and leave the final choice to the child.

I personally do not believe in marriage for various reasons, but the idea of marriage for love is quite a recent one in human history.
