Negative self talk might be from schizophrenia voices... If so, the cure to them is to tell them,
"Thats a lie!"
To each negative thing they say. Don't argue with the voices, just tell them "thats a lie" then ignore them...
They feed off of fear and sadness. (Loosh) They may have hassled your dad into it. Some say there are family demons that "haunt" families....
It's possible he could quickly shake them off. He just has to depower them - by showing them no emo - and repower himself.
