Southern Italians are more genetically in line with Greeks and people from the Balkans than Arabs and Africans. Northern Italians are genetically Germanic and Nordic. The reason Americans in the early 1900s were so against Italian immigrants is the same reason they were against Irish immigrants; they were Catholic. It wasn't a racial thing.

The article is about the broader anti-Catholic prejudice, which very much existed in the US, the second iteration of the KKK especially was very anti-Catholic and had almost as much antipathy agains Southern and Eastern European immigrants who were arriving at the time as they had against the black minority, but that doesn't mean they saw those Italians, Poles, etc. as nonwhite.
