I've been thinking about going to one since I can't stand going to the beach. I'm really pale so I'd like to look at least somewhat less cave-dwelling.

If you have very pale skin it's actually very harmful in the long term.
I used that in my teens (now even banned for teens in my country because of how bad it is) and also had a lot of sunburns when I did go on holidays with my parents and I have used up much of my tanning capital and will rather burn, or turn reddish than tan.
