I always go along the path of least resistance (read: least effort), e.g. melee only minmaxing in souls slop because using magic requires a conscious effort. You can't however do that in strategy slop or any other brain tickling slop hence why i was never good at them. As a kid i also used to resort to guides if i was stuck in a game for more than five minutes. Damn i still feel proud of myself whenever i beat a game all by myself.

Was i just raised badly?

Similar here too but the path of least resistance is based so whatever

I'll autistically learn mechanics for games I like

Most games aren't worth the effort

Souls-like games are the most boring games ever made. I've tried to learn the mechanics for ds1, ds3, sekiro and for honor. They literally make my brain feel like its doing a plank. Not only that, its so piss boring - wait, react, wait, react, react, wait. Are you doing more reacting or waiting?
