Today is a very important day in my country because the results of our national high school leaving exam are being announced. It’s the exam that determines whether you graduate from high school, similar to high school graduation in the U.S.
Today, everyone is out celebrating. People are in the streets, going to clubs with their friends, and guys are celebrating with their girlfriends or hanging out with their friends. Meanwhile, I’m at home alone, listening to music because I don’t have any friends or even a girlfriend. Everywhere I look, people are happy. I wish I could be like them—a normal teenager, celebrating and living in the moment without worrying about tomorrow.
Last year, it was my turn. I took this exam too, but I didn’t celebrate anything. I had no one to celebrate with. I was just at home with my mother, who was happy for me. No one invited me. No one thought about me. Sometimes, I wish I had never been born if this is what my life was going to be like—living in complete loneliness.
The part that hurts me the most is knowing that I’ll never get those years back. I can never go back and experience those moments the way everyone else did. I’ll never get the chance to build those friendships while growing up because I spent my entire adolescence in complete isolation and loneliness. I’ll never get to have that typical neurotypical teenage life because, for me, it never even began. I’ll never be like everyone else.
