Synopsis : Railgun is based in Academy City, a student town which specialises in students with esper powers. It follows Misaka Mikoto aka Railgun, one of the most powerful espers in the city. Her group of friends hang out and occasionally beat up bad guys.

Rev : This anime is the definition of mid. Like its right there in the middle. Its never offending or revolting (in the way Code Geass or Tokyo Revengers are) but its also only rarely exciting. Everything is smooth enough to not make you want to turn it off, so you can still watch its entirety without much friction and yet gain nothing out of it. "Boring" is a word that comes to mind.

Its extremely juvenile. Most of the scenarios involve a bunch of middle school kids mucking around. The themes and motifs are surface level and again, childish.

It has okay Characters I guess. The MC is likeable and made everything else easier to gulp down. The side characters are fine, maybe a little annoying in parts which I'll go into detail in spoilers. One thing I noticed is the characters never actually change during the course of the anime. Except perhaps Saten there is nil development. The villians on the other hand are downright horrendous. One dimensional laughable caricatures without any nuance.

The anime is like structured as 70% slice of life with small arcs of 30% action thrown in between. There's barely any "plot" so to say. It all ties together at the end but again its very surface level. Feels like I'm watching a filler.

On the plus side it has a great OP and overall good soundtrack. The animation is competent, though it may sometimes be subpar in action scenes. The art style is fine to look at and as I said its overall engaging enough to not want to turn it off.

Final verdict: I think this anime works best if you are new to anime or a literal child (or both). This is definitely meant for a younger audience who are easily entertained by flashy action scenes and common anime tropes. But overall it doesn't manage to do anything that other anime haven't done 10 times better. Avoid if you are older than 22.

Ok so Saten, despite being the only character with an arc,is bland af. I found kokkoro to be annoying even though her VA did a good job of giving her a unique style. Her infatuation with Misaka is played for comedic effect but I never found it funny. Uiharu is cute and likeable. But her role in the final arc singlehandedly brought it down. That entire conflict with Kokkorro was unnecessary. Kongo mitsuo was cool despite having a short appearence

That shows sucks anyways.

The whole index and railgun series suck.

Watched it years ago.

Someone recommended it to me.

I just watch whatever I want or what I think I like (which is generally fantasy/medieval/adventure animes). I don't trust people's tastes.

Maybe I'll try Index 1 to see if its any better.

Index there's a little more action. I personally prefer index more than railgun (which you mention about having too much slice of life).

Still the anime isn't that great.

Season 1 of Railgun is predominantly slice of life centered but the artistic direction of it changed by the time of Season 2

The concept went from “spin-off focused on a cute waifu that fans like” (eg: relatively inconsequential to the narrative and generally lighthearted) to a Better Call Saul type of thing where it’s actually expanding significantly on the established plot and characters; the parts that were adapted in Season 2 get significantly more serious and narrative/character focused as a result

Tbh the index/railgun verse is so big and has so much content that it’s hard to respond cohesively to your critiques without textwalling because there’s so much I could touch on that isnt immediately apparent in the first season of the spinoff

Anyways the anime adaptations of Index are subpar and seasons 2 & 3 of Railgun are almost universally agreed to be the best of the toaru anime (they vastly exceed everything else in terms of budget, effort, and just as an adaptation of the source material) so I’d suggest moving onto that since you’re already invested in it

@shii410 on sui watch RN.

Watch land of the lustrous because I want a review on that ngl.

On the topic of artistic direction I can't help but notice how different Index 1 feels to Railgun ( 2 episodes in) . Even Misaka feels different. Maybe I'll watch 9 episodes then jump straight to Railgun S and watch 10 episodes. After that I'll decide if I wanna continue with Raildex

Summarizing: It's trash

Watch Accelerator next.

I never watched any of the toaru anime in my early or mid teens. I hardly enjoy such type of anime anymore, so I doubt I'll ever end up watching it.

that sounds about right

l hate this series one of the characters persuaded me to play a gacha game. She also has small tits.

Railgun is not as good as index. It was boring,

Misaka Mikoto is cute though and the characters are enjoyable. Although I do see how there is no character development, unless you watch the episode with the level upper.

kokkoro - lesbian obsessed with misaka, voice actor is ok. Teleportation is pretty cool, also her weapon. Slim body type, flat

Misaka - cute JB, top esper but not a bitch, wife material, slim body type, small breasts

Saten - not much to say about her since she is a side character. Normal breasts. Is sad because even though she is an esper she has no powers.

Kamijō Tōma - pretty chill guy, not annoying for a male character

Accelerator - Annoying at first, become based when he meets last order
