As a child, although I rarely ever watched anime, whenever I did, I was never under the impression that the characters were Asian at all.

I always saw anime characters for what they really were. Either a desire to be White or the fact that Caucasian features are regarded as the most attractive.

Did anyone else think the same?

Though I’d argue the resemblance to Asians goes beyond just the neoteny. Characters are often drawn with brachycephalic heads and typically drawn with triangular lower thirds, which don’t resemble features of white bone structure
