Let's just take a look at some top animes of this season
Chainsaw Man = beta worshipping a stacy.
Kage no Jitsuryokusha = chad with harem.
Spy x Family = Chad x Stacy.
Bleach = chad mc.
...
I can go on and on but that's essentially all of these animes

We can say the same about the movie industry as they always cast chads and stacies as main characters because that's the only way normies can simpathize with them.

In this corner of the world its about the life of a young girl surviving in Japan during WW2.
barefoot over Hiroshima is about a boy surviving in Japan after the Americans dropped the nuclear bombs.
Neon Genesis Evangelion has a very meek boy as the MC.
Manga but whatever: In Oyasumi Punpun you literally never even see the real face of the mc and he is often portrayed as a cartoon-bird, even though the rest of the manga is drawn quite detailed.
to just name a few.

Anime just means japanese animation, what people mean by anime today is the style, avatar is more anime than barefoot and grave of fireflies in that sense. I can't link you the video because I don't even remember when he uploaded or if it's still up.
But as far as I can remember this is what happened:
