It's easy to be altruistic on the side when you're a happy and fulfilled winner of life. However, painful struggle for survival will drain altruism out of anyone. This one of those things that media (surprise, surprise) portrays opposite to reality. Poor and unhappy people are likely to be the meanest and most selfish there are because they can't afford anything else.
