We have had an extremely androcentric patriarchal way of doing things for a long time , the dowry was initially put in place to help out newlyweds with starting a home and for the woman who is going to another man's house to live in to have a sense of identity and shit. Eventually it escalated to what it is now, the thing is it all goes back to what are you willing to pay for your daughter to live a comfortable lifestyle. There are people who work as manual labourers they don't get a lot of dowry , you pay the amount according to the comfort you want. Getting a decent job is such a fucking achievement here that they have literal parades and victory carnivals for the dudes that make it , and if you don't have a job it is completely fucking over , even if you are a local chad you might get something in ultra modern places otherwise you are completely fucking invisible.

I'll describe the grind for say an engineering pathway, you have to start studying like 8-9 h a day from 9th grade (and actual studying none of the just copying something shit ) Then you finally give the JEE Mains and JEE Advanced exam in 12th grade , some even start preparations from 6th grade , your performance in the exam gets you in a college , there you have to grind your ass again for 5 years , and then use that degree to get the job. For a lot of people a simply bachelor ain't cutting it anymore so they now have to prepare for another competitive examination post graduation to enroll in masters.

Most people can't cope with this shit , so a lot of rich or semi rich people with loans send their kids to different countries to study.As for them getting with your women , how the fuck is that possible man. You make very good points but what you fail to understand is that these things operate under rules of religion, the articles you are referring to ones who send their children to foreign countries, or some back to India for better opportunities, or who are progressive and don't do any of this arranged marriage shit do exist but they are a tiny minority compared to the rest of the population. The customs I mentioned are mainly followed in North India (which has the highest population density)and some toned down version of it is followed in south India, south Indians are usually a lot more progressive than the North.
