Guys at large don't seem to understand what foidlets are implying when they say this. They're not literally saying that they need you in order to be 'protected' from something, they're saying that you should be 'able to protect yourself.'

What I mean is, imagine you're out with her, and some taller guy comes over and starts flirting with her and making moves on her. You tell the guy to back off, and he just starts getting aggressive with you and threatens to beat you to a pulp. What the hell are you supposed to actually do? You either refrain from fighting and the guy takes your partner and walks off, or you decide to take your chances with an opponent that is going to be nearly impossible to beat in hand-to-hand combat.

That's what foids mean when they say 'I want to feel protected.' It is not a literal 'I need a man to function as my bodyguard,' they operate on a sense of this primal hypothetical in which you don't have access to things such as firearms or other weaponry and would have to rely on your own strength. If they think you can't win that, they'll get the "-ick" from you.
