I mostly blame it on the huge consumption of restaurant food and fast food here in Burgerland. About 60% of food spending here is on "food away from home," basically restaurants and fast food. Restaurant and fast food tends to be really unhealthy and very high calorie. Like in the 5 minutes it takes a woman to gulp down her Starbucks Venti Frappuccino she's probably consumed 500 calories already.
And of course pizza is basically our "official national food" (other than burgers of course); some people eat an entire pizza everyday, and pizza is very high calorie.
But let's not take the blame off grocery stores. I went in my local Walmart recently to get groceries and there are at least 2 very long aisles probably 50 yards long devoted entirely to ice cream.
