I loved the ending, where the boy has the let go of his mother and accept that it’s time for her death as she’s sick from terminal cancer and he loses his innocence that made him hesitate when shooting a bow to a proficient archer that can fire without flinching at the end like his father. However, the problem with the film is the relationship between him and his father, all he does is protect him and that’s about it, we never learn about his motivations and personality except that he’s respected.

The father should’ve been more fleshed out as to why the boy left the village to find a new group to leave his father behind.

Also, the soldier’s performance sucked and should’ve been cut

I agree that it's very good and the whole dramatic climax that you mentioned almost brought me to tears in the fucking kinoplex tbh.

That is one opinion that I never expected to see. Normally people fellate the first journey because it's Jamie and Spike aka father and son.

You get the vibe that he's a turboNT guy that is worried his son won't make it in the cruel world, so he takes him out as soon as possible. And the cheating scene characterises him, he has given up on his ill wife and isn't brave enough to break the family apart.

I think he sold the "literal zoomer out of his element" pitch well enough, your mileage may vary on whether that's a good character to have in the first place. The only part I disliked about him was that he said zombie.

I just feel like the lack of investment in the father and son relationship caused this feeling of whiplash where the son feels like he is too weak and can’t live up to everyone’s expectations but then is suddenly leaving the island with his frail mom in the morning to seek out the doctor which was an almost 100% suicidal mission.

If there was more build up, I could’ve felt like Spike’s desperation would’ve outweighed any fear he had before.

Do you recommend it? And what country is it set in
England, and ultimately yes, there’s very few good movies this year that will be as good or better.
