Title. There was a tiny blip in 2020 when the US fell under both China and Japan for the first time, though that time it was just by a couple dozen movies.

India had been leading the chart since 2000, but the US was rather close to it in mid-2000s, and from the way those lines evolved, I wonder whether the US wasn't producing more movies than India in the 90s. This is the kind of stuff that gets rather underdiscussed, since people mostly just wonder how those countries stand vis-a-vis each other economically and such, but the US was absolutely dominant culture-wise and basically just incomparable to other countries in that area for decades, so it's hard to deny that this had changed at least somewhat.

The per capita producers are also interesting, I definitely wouldn't have expected some of those to be there (I guess a lot of those movies are produced by foreign companies and use those countries for their scenic visuals), but unfortunately, Omdia's database doesn't seem to be publicly available so I guess this is as much as we'll get.

a completely unrelated data point is that modern movies are almost all unwatchable despite their enormous budgets
