Back in 2008, left still had some credibility in the eyes of the people and the right wing alternative was exclusively being a neocon USA, NATO and EU lover. There was practically nothing else. Literally everything else was seen as extremism in the West and was totally marginalized.

In 2018, things are a bit better because the liberal West lost its credibility, people don't take the SJWs seriously anymore, EU is collapsing, there are more and more anti-system memes and sentiments popping up online and so on.

Things like someone like Trump being elected, brexit and yellow vest would be seen as a fairytale if someone predicted that in 2008. Note, I don't like Trump, but his election shows a massive change in public sentiment for the better.

If we're picking one thing, it's smartphones and the cultural shift (or more like overdrive - they didn't create anything, but accelerated the replication of the worst of humanity that already existed) they brought about.
