I will go through the New Testament readings on God's message for our salvation and having eternal life with him:
Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:4 - And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
What these 2 scriptures are saying is that you must be:
1. be baptized by full emersion
2. have received the gift of the Holy Spirit
When you have received the Holy Spirit, this will be evident as you will speak in tongues - an unknown language that even we don't know ourselves, but it is a language to God:
1 Corinthians 14:2 - For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
and
1 Corinthians 14:14 - For if I pray in an unknown tongue
Romans 8:16-17 - The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
John 3:3 - “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.
These 2 scriptures indicate the necessity of receiving the Holy Spirit to be "glorified" and have eternal life in the kingdom of God.
Born again - meaning have received both the Holy Spirit and been baptised by full emersion.
To receive the Holy Spirit, you must have repented and be willing to submit to the Lord for the rest of your life - as you are born again. If you are wishing to receive, say a few Hallelujahs, or just ask the Lord to fill you with his spirit. You will know when you have received, as you will speak out in tongues - a language that you do not understand.
Do not fret if it takes a while to receive the spirit:
Matthew 7:7 - Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you
Other important scripture on receiving the holy spirit and speaking in tongues:
For anybody wondering I am Protestant, pentecostal.
