The Confederacy. There was legislation put forth by the south that was meant to emancipate slaves prior to the CW. Slavery wasn't optimal or convenient, it's part of the reason why the South was so poor. There was a realization that it would have just been cheaper to hire immigrants like the Irish, pay them a small wage and send them on their way instead of providing the necessary living essentials for blacks who then wouldn't even work hard. Plus most of the south didn't own slaves, it was only the small percentage of rich people that did. All of that blood for nothing.

Don't forget the more centralized government envisioned by the unionists, the Confederacy pushed for less centralized power in order to give people more freedoms. In order for the union to push its own narrative, it needed to use racism to justify provoking a country of which separated within legal means by the constitution that founded the country.
