Piracy and physical media is king.

THIS!!! If you look at what devs were able to do with the ps1, Sega Saturn and N64 and compare that to nowadays, the devs are to blame, or more like the companies which hire based on quotas and such instead of merit.

I wish I was young enough and had the drive to create my own handheld console, development tools for it and some games.

But the problem is that today's market is a different one.
When you look at the slop that people enjoy nowadays, actual good games and homebrew will never make it anymore.

I in fact once wanted to start developing for the Xbox platform as it seems to be the easiest to get into.

Seeing what the masses enjoy and buy I see no reason to do it because in the end, I of course would want to earn money with it.

Nobody puts in real work for free or for no reason, obviously.
