2009 or so was when things started to go south really quickly. Life from all angles was far better back then. Inceldom was lower by an unbelievably large margin, jobs were easier to get (before crash), no social media, and the best part, political correctness was 1% as bad as it is today. This was showcased in the xbox 360 call of duty lobbies, people were brutal to each other, kids throwing around racial slurs, people saying they'll rape your mother and kill your entire family, faggot being thrown around, guys telling girls to get back in the kitchen, etc it felt like fucking heaven compared to now, where normies are literally competing with each other to see who can be most easily offended.

To be honest it probably has to do with your age back then and how you perceived the world. When you are 10-16 years old you have hope in nearly all aspects of your life, and maybe that's why you were happier in these years. Also when you are that age no one expects you to be coherent or to have any real responsabilities, life isn't very hard. As years pass by and you realize that you're fucked for life you simply try to deam with it the best way you can.
