i was looking online about jobs, possibly getting into a trade, and ranting about my job a bit

i got told the typical stuff. "you are lazy", "nobody is given a silver spoon and a free ride", "you expect everything to come to you, you have to earn it" etc. etc.

was told to look at trades if i wanted a job that made good money, okay, i took a look

5. fucking. years. to become a fully trained electrician in canada. what the FUCK? i'll be about 30 by that time. and just getting a "real job" by that point. fuck off

no wonder there is a skilled labor shortage when becoming an electrician takes as long as becoming a doctor.

anyways, my point? i am expected to work for near minimum wage 5 years "training" to finally get a job that pays decent, and if i question this at all i am called lazy, a loser, and a bum who just wants everything handed to me.

I concur i'm basically glorified electrician for most part of work and whatever i got to learn about it in my first year of enginiggering (which has many common subjects among all related branches, subbranches etc) is sufficient for my line of work
maximum 1.5 years worth of learning both theoretical and practical is damn sufficient for electrician work - rest is just scamming

Yeah I looked into trades 5years ago and I discovered the same thing. Basically they expect you to be a slave for them until they grace you with a job. Engineering is even worse because they expect you to have this experience straight out of school, which can only happen if you got a lot of internships and did many side projects throughout your school years which very tough because engineering workload is very brutal. Oh and they also except you to have a good GPA. Basically this economy doesn't work for ordinary people anymore. It only works for the super high IQ autists who have the financial backing from their parents to stay in school till they're done with their pHds in their early 30s.

trades take 3-5 years to get past an apprenticeship where wages are 17 CAD/hour (god awful almost minimum wage) then if you want to make any more than 25 CAD/hour you need to be in a union. getting in a union requires you to either go to trades college for a few years or know somebody already in the union AND you need tons of work experience
