I have never understood the idea that a man is supposed to throw himself into harm's way for a woman, or even for a child. If you are talking about your own family, that is one thing, but the idea that you owe your life to strangers simply because of their sex or age has never made sense to me. It seems to come from a mix of old chivalric ideals and modern sentimentality, both of which put women and children on a pedestal, but when you look closely it is really just a way of making men disposable.
