TikTok creator Erica Tham (@ericatham) happened upon the method when talking to a male friend about dating, “I learned some information today that feels illegal to know,” she shares in her now-viral explainer video.

To understand the penny dating trend, think of love bombing (intense displays of affection and interest early on in a relationship) infused with hints of ‘boy math’ and market manipulation. Oh, and don’t forget an undertone of gaslighting.

It's called "penny dating": Someone views you as a piggy bank when first trying to woo you and then maintains a relationship with you. Over time, the person strategically reduces how much they invest in you and in the relationship, down to the point that the person need offer only "pennies" to maintain your interest.
