There are thousands of religions that exist, virtually every culture has their own religion to fulfill their spiritual needs and form a moral blanket to keep their group/civilization intact. Because of that, they are generally very similar to one another. Don't mindlessly kill, be positive, work hard, there are punishments for sin in the afterlife, and only have sex when you are married/sexual desire is evil.
That is quite telling, isn't it? The vast majority of religions, whose role is to keep civilization intact, absolutely vilify premarital sex. Quite a few even describe it as a grave sin, such as Mormonism. Why would that be the case?
Our sexual impulses are inherently destructive. It is the single most powerful motivator in our life, especially for men. Evolutionary speaking, reproduction is the purpose of life. Because of our limited and competitive world, all animals, including humans, developed sexual desires that adapt to the violent world we live in. This causes females to lust after the "bad boys" of each species, or the alphas. Traits such as being tall, high fwhr, strong chin, good frame, clear skin, etc signal this. Women going after these "alphas" rewards and propagates evil. Of course, due to their natural unstable and sometimes violent lifestyle, you can't form long term relationships with them despite their good genes for survival (in the wild). So relationships with those kinds of men are always short term. Men, wanting to fulfill their sexual desires and acquire social status, would be encouraged to be destructive and thuggish in order to get what they want, instead of working hard and being a good and moral citizen. Not only that, but sex in of itself is a somewhat violent act of dominating another person. It is a naturally sadistic urge for all (hetero) men, and a naturally submissive urge for all (hetero) women to reward that evil sadism.
Religions answers this problem by strongly prohibiting polygamy, limiting sex for only marriage. This creates monogamy, forcing each man and woman to have only one partner, and stay with that person for a lifetime. This shifts attention away from short term desires and create more incentive for long term stability. This also puts more emphasis on feeling love for that person rather than just lust, which IS an evil urge for both genders. And it prevents the problems that arise from dating women who has had many partners, such as higher risk of cheating on you, being depressed, being less happy, having stds, divorcing you, being a single mother, having dna from other men affecting all of your offspring, etc. It also helps in making more nuclear families with good morals behind them, the base for any civilization.
If it wasn't for religion-backing monogamy and sexual purity, we would have a plethora of problems decaying our nations. Many countries, such as the Roman Empire, have went through these phases before their country dies, mostly after acquiring massive wealth. These problems include: single motherhood epidemic, increased crime, lower moral aptitude, far lower fertility rate, chasing after short term pleasures rather than long term happiness, lower sense of sacrificing yourself for benefit of family/country, more welfare since no god or family, less need for a good job, many sexless men (women are pickier while men will screw anything), many used up and low quality women, more poverty, etc. Every prosperous nation was very sexually repressed.
