If you look at the picture below you can see that the USA had a relatively normal prison system until around 1970. 100 out of 100.000 citizens were in jail. This is about the same as in Europe or most other countries. Then starting around 1980 the system completely gets out of control and the incarceration rate suddenly skyrockets to 500 per 100.000 which is 5 times higher than that of European countries. In the article a higher rate of 655 per 100.000 is mentioned which is crazy.
I also notice that for some crimes you get a life sentence in the USA while in Germany you would get about 2 years on parole or less. An example of that would be Larry Nassar getting 60 years for owning child porn. In Germany he would have gotten 2 years on parole and would have had to get therapy or something. Of course for molesting all those girls he would have gotten jail time but maybe something like 5 years. For the child porn he would have gotten 2 years on parole.
Another example would be that mother that glued her child's hands to a wall and got 99 years. She also kicked and hit the child causing serious injuries. But in Germany she would have gotten 5 years at best and would probably have been out after 3-3.5 years.
Why does America have a life sentence for virtually anything. It feels like parking incorrectly will give you a life sentence there.
Quote from Wikipedia: "That means the US held 21.0% of the world's prisoners in 2015, even though the US represented only around 4.4 percent of the world's population in 2015"
