Why is subbed anime dialogue so much more graphic and brutal than dubbed anime dialogue?

For example:

Subbed anime: “I’ll bite you to death motherfucker!”

Dubbed anime: “My teeth is all I’ll need, and I’ll tear you to pieces!!!”

That’s just one example, subbed in general is far more graphic with its dialogue. Why is it so dumbed down with dubbed?

Both suffer from tonal manipulation. Subs often embellish- there's no jap version for motherfucker and the original is probably closer to piece of shit or dumbass. Dubs might adapt it to meet content guidelines and/or to match the timing of the original japanese.

this. when u know enough Japanese you'll be able to tell instantly when translators are playing things up or putting their own spin on things for no reason

I’m speaking as someone who does localization work now (but I can’t say too much without doxxing myself) but companies give us guidelines so as not to offend foreign audiences. It’s pretty bullshit.

We are also given free rein to fuck around with the source material, which could either be a good or bad thing depending on the translator/localizer.

Personally, I try to keep things as engaging and based as possible, but I can’t speak for others.
