I read it quite a while ago now but beyond the art the while thing was just “misery porn” to the point where the suffering of the characters felt cheap. The pacing was abysmal too, and personally the main character simply has had a more fulfilling life than most normies so I couldn’t relate to him or his supposed “”suffering”” (like fucking his own aunt).

Right but I thought it was pretty overrated, it’s insistence on being overly cynical because readers were complaining felt immature as well and led to some of the elements in the story feeling contrived.

this can be explained rather easily. to be on this website you must have a psyche that went through far greater pain than most people - therefore something like punpun will naturally apeal to you. normies however, ofc, havent. normies generally have far less individuality than people like us, so they have to "create" something that will make them stand out. a good and easy way to do that is by faking depression and such. this is why normied do idiotic shit such as:
a. consuming and obsessing over anime like punpun, evangelion, etc
b. listening to stuff like molchat doma

I do actually like tearjerker stories. But more the Key type (Kanon, Air). As in, stories where there are sad elements and hardship but end on a positive note instead of leaving you feeling miserable and down.

It's pretty shit, it tries WAY too hard to be edgy and dark, and this overbearing commitment to showing the viewer how fucked up and dark it is not only lacks in subtlety like actually good sad stories, it ends up coming across as borderline comical in some moments.
I'd rather just rewatch Haibane Renmei for the 50 billionth time if I wanted a good anime about depression and suicide
