I can give an honest and accurate perspective since I live here. Violent Rapes do occur here but extremely rare. The media does a good job of mass reporting these crimes and blowing it out of proportion.
What about male suicides due to divorce rapes, dowry harassment cases etc? You never see those in the news even though they are much more common here. Indian men are painted as these vile, uncouthy creatures waiting for any opportunity to rape these innocent , wonderful indian women who can do no wrong. Based on what I have read and found while researching, overwhelming majority of rapes including the violent ones are committed mainly by men who come from poor families and who are grown up in rural society of India which is sexually repressive, abusive towards females and very backward as well. These men are sexually starved, hardly educated, crude and don't know how to behave with females because they've been seeing their father beating their mother since childhood. When these men become teen or enter their 20s, they don't know how to control their sexual thirst; thus they rape females. What encourages them more is they think due to shaming by society, the victim's family won't report to the police and the very weak and corrupt judiciary that doesn't do its work effectively. Harassment by such men so rampant that in many villages, school girls fear to go to out after sunset.
