Soy Why does everyone consider themselves a nerd these days?

I'm an oldcel, so I remember 30 years ago when I was a teen, it wasn't cool to be a nerd or even to love video games (especially PC games). Now everyone proudly calls themselves a nerd, especially on spaces like Reddit.

It's annoying (yes, I'm "gatekeeping," to borrow a Reddit term). Kind of like how everyone says they have anxiety and depression these days, even though 95% of them don't really and wouldn't be diagnosed with it by a professional.

I think it's the realization that nerds make the most money (tech sector), and they appreciate the tech that nerds brought to their lives (females appreciating Tinder, etc.). Also everyone is trying to stand out as "unique" and get victim points ("I'm an anime nerd with anxiety and depression!!")

"nerd" like a lot of other subcultures used to be a niche and dedicated group of people that is now a commercialized aesthetic. It is now literally just that an "aesthetic". They kinda did the same with incel. "femcel" is just an aesthetic rip off of incel.

In the 90s, they called themselves “geeks” as opposed to nerds. Since the incel category didn't exist, it was seen as the lowest of the low, so they hated being called nerds. However, this coincided with the spread of the internet in homes, the emergence of multimedia computers, and normies quickly wanting to take over that environment. Since being a nerd is no longer frowned upon today, they cynically declare themselves as such since it is harmless and old-fashioned.
