Whenever I browse through old threads I see that 60% of the users are banned, why is that? Is the moderation here too strict? I wish this forum had more users to be honest.

Because this site is prone to drama which often leaves causalities when (((mods))) get trigger happy or those users request to get banned because "the site has gone to shit". Always was like this.

I have been here on various accounts since early 2018 and I'm very well aware of the nature of this site and it's predecessors.
Believe it or not tons of users get addicted to this place feel that it’s bad for them and request a ban to help them stay away.
That or they want to be kept away because they need to study or want to force themselves to lay low because some asshole/s in real life are stalking them or they believe they are being stalked anyway.
Most banned users don't say "self-banned" from what I have seen, I feel like most users get banned because they troll or ascend.
Yeah that makes sense, I guess there's many factors that influence the high number of bans.
Other times it’s just accumulated warnings that get them banned.
What I mean is we mods may not even intend to ban a certain user when we warn them but it just so happens the warning we give them stacks up with their pre existing warnings and then they are auto banned.
