Every group has an identity that they cultivate and present to the world. This is based on the group's beliefs, which then guide and instruct their actions. This is true of all groups, whether they are partitioned by tribe, ethnicity, or nation.
To use a modern day example, African American Black thugs who know almost nothing of Africa, and don't call themselves African. Everyone has some general idea of how your average Black thug in a US metropolitan city behaves. This isn't by accident or by people's racist, false beliefs about the group.
