Edit: For those that don't want to go to the cesspool that is reddit:
Answer:
"Beauty standards and a male dominated society.
That's basically it.
It's the same thing as wearing a corset, foot binding, or any number of other uncomfortable things women have done for the sake of fashion over the centuries. It's just a modern version of it.
It's not really any different than getting a nose job or breast implants. Being more attractive gives women an edge over other women, particularly in male dominated societies.
If two women of equal skill apply for a job, generally the better looking one will get the job.
In many cases a better looking woman will get a job over a more qualified less attractive woman.
That's exactly what is going on here. The surgery makes the women more attractive according to the beauty standards of the society they live in, and thus gives them an advantage over other women in their fields."
"If I recall, this mindset is pervasive throughout South Korea and Japan as well, with girls getting surgeries as birthday and graduation gifts. "
"
answer: societal pressure to look beautiful is harsh and some people, especially women, seem to be subjected to unrealistic standards that these individuals then seek to meet via surgery.
While some jobs may require you to be pretty, I would argue that many of the comments are hyperbole.
"
And of course, if you look at the bottom of the post, all the reasonable opinions are downvoted at -20 and hidden:
"Women want to be beautiful, just as much as men appreciate beautiful. Using the "patriarchy" in this case isn't fully correct. Surgery for these women can be both a power play, and motivated by a personal desire to possess greater beauty. Plastic surgery culture in Asia exists amongst many women, even the super wealthy who do not work."
"
Beauty standards are determined by the women and gay men running the fashion industry. Better looking men get hired over their less attractive counterparts too.
Stop trying to blame men for your problems."
