Why do Americans call foids "ma'am"?

I never met or personally knew an American irl, but in videos I see of them, they often call foids "ma'am".
I don't think I've ever heard any one call a foid "ma'am" here in England.

Calling a foid that word is just plain cucked to me, it's like calling a guy "sir".
