I remember seeing a study long ago that scanned the brains of religious people and atheists. They subjected both groups to certain words like "God" etc. The brains of religious people upon hearing "God" shows signs of peace, whereas the atheist brains showed stress.
A lot of atheists have emotional baggage that is probably due to their religious upbringing that they haven't yet shaken off.

I think I agree with @Ahnfeltia that you need some initial point from which you build your moral foundation, and that this has to be done axiomatically from first principles. You just have to take some things given to be true as is, else there's no shared foundation from which anyone can morally relate to each other and it all becomes relativistic.
