When people “cry themselves to sleep” are they serious?

What the hell does that mean? How do you cry yourself to sleep? Is it an expression? I don’t remember the last time I cried though I feel emotions quite strongly sometimes.

I have before a while ago, as pathetic as it sounds when life sucks it happens, you basically get tired while crying and being in bed so you just fall asleep after a while. Don’t think it’s something common atleast not for me
