For me this is a challenging question, due to the fact that the golden era of games was more than 10 years ago, which made it the best time to anyone wanting a beginning, and I'm sure most of y'all went in at that age (2004-2017).
One can't just ignore the many great titles that came out in that era, which defined how games are played and made to this day; but of course you don't want to look pretencious or outdated, and even less like a normie (from my opinion).
It depends as well of what would be the main objective, if to introduce someone to a part of modern culture that they ignore, or to fully try to get them to appreciate this way of life.
As for my recommendations (based on my experience), I would suggest someone trying the following titles (no particular order):
TLOZ (Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword); Super Mario Galaxy; Half life 2; Devil May Cry 3; Persona; God of War (greek saga); Pokemon (5th gen); Resident Evil 4; Metal Gear Solid; CoD: MW or BO; Yakuza; Street Fighter/Tekken (or any BIG fighting game, not like MK); GTA; Fallout NV; Skyrim; Silent Hill 2; Uncharted 3; The Witcher; RDR; Batman Arkham; Far Cry; Final Fantasy.
P.D: It's mainly directed to people from our generations, no old farts, millenials are the farthest I'd set my criteria for.

Ironic how I consider myself a "retro gamer" and I haven't played 95% of those. Thanks for the list, I put it in my bookmarks for when I need another game to buy.

The golden era of games was from the early 90s to the early 00s

I would say Skyrim for the open world and how slow you can make the game (take time to learn things), Any GTA game, Forza Horizon if you have Xbox

I guess I'll put my favourite games and the ones I'm playing right now.

Phantasy Star Universe (original PSO is definitely still online), Shenmue, Sonic Adventure 2, Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS, Red Alert 2, Quake 2, FEAR 2.

Currently as I've said I'm mainly playing E rated games like Roblox as they seem to have less politics and stuff in them.

Play Skyrim, then play Morrowind in the OpenMorrowind engine with mods.

Super Mario Bros. 3

From a technical and retrospective view point, I fully agree, it's amazing that starting that decade we still got NES games and finishing it PS2 came out.
BUT that was an amazing era for the ones in the know; the time period it took for games to get fully mainstream, the last innovative and most including era, that's what I'm referring to.
