Basically what it would be if it continued to be used for the same scientific purposes as in the past, nowadays it is English and I believe that the replacement occurred due to a mere question of bourgeois revolutions and separation from the past of the Catholic Church
 
Then we'd be speaking latin
 
Before English it was French. English became the the lingua franca after WW2 I believe
