The social contract is not an agreement between society and you as a person.

The social contract is an agreement between society and you as a concept - you as a student, worker, etc.

Some "essential workers" realized this back in the shitshow that was the 2020 pandemic. They realized that, when the govt and the rich talked about "essential workers", they were actually referring to the roles being essential, not the humans actually operating and materializing said roles. But by then it was too late, because one of the biggest wealth transfers was already underway.

You cannot fully shield from this, because you're not the one deciding which roles exist, and which roles get X amount of money paid to them for existing (among other things like resource attribution, rights, etc.). It's like the Casino having the house advantage. There is also an element of plausible deniability - you'll often hear observations from the working class that "the social contract is null and void" because government, industries and authorities didn't keep their end of the deal. Let's say that one of your roles at some point in your life was making ice creams at factories. You get replaced by a robot and fired, and you cannot get hired at other factories, because they're also using robots, or cheap labour as reserve. The industry will claim that the contract between the industry and the role was technically not broken, because the role still exists - it's just being done by a robot or by some underpaid immigrant. You were never part of the picture.

Really think about it - why would they want YOU? They want your labour, until you can be replaced by a more efficient pipeline. They don't want YOU - they have to pay you a salary, health insurance, among other things. You'll only get your job back if the cost of operating the robots exceeds that of hiring a qualified human.

I'm sorry to inform you, but you are also under contract with society as a concept. You just got a better deal compared to us, is all... but you're not Chad or Tyrone either, so it's gonna be interesting to see if the stability you were promised remains in the next 5 years.
