Discussion What enables one to have good social skills?

  • Thread starter NiggasCallmedaDrink

What enables one to not have good social skills?

  • People's willingness to talk to you (nothing you can do, no matter if you improve or not)

  • Coping Mechanism (forced introversion, fear of rejection, other defense mechanisms bc poor treatment

  • Legitmately your own full fault (not vocally articulate, poor listening skills, low IQ, solipsism)

  • Social skills is just a fucking meme

Here are the three categories I can think of, but it you have other reasons and why, you can list them. I thinking through the perspective of NOT being autistic. This is for brocels who don't have autism. But, I'm aware that autism significantly one's social skills.

Being non-NT is a huge curse in this regard. Not only that but having any sort of mental ailment, like anxiety. Fucks you over real bad

I have something similar to anxiety, but it is more like anger. I just really can't tolerate people's shit and that's probably caused my downfall socially. People say "that I look that I don't want to be there" and "seem stand-off ish".

if you stay inside all day talking to no one for at least 2 years, you cannot regain your social skills, ive been living like this for about the past 6 years or so and even at year 2 i just cant fucking regain them

1.social genes (no autism etc)
2.looks (linked to 3)
3.positive reinforcement

Being socially awkward is just my personality, it's not even my fault. I'm naturally quiet, I don't have that urge to socialise like other people seem to have.

I was like this in middle school, but around 8th grade to junior year, I wanted to socialize more and try to be genuinely be "likeable", but after a while it felt like I had to put int all the work of socializing; I just gave up in senior year, then people blame me for why I don't any friends because of this one particular point where I decided to not engage anymore despite all the effort I put into it. That's I lean more towards Coping Mechanism as my reason.

it pisses me off the most how my entire family thinks im some kind of mentally ill weirdo for being socially inept but if chad was shy everyone would be like omg hes soooo shy its soooo cute :p :foidSoy:

Personally, I just need an incentive to talk to someone or complete an ulterior motive of mine. I don't like talking to normie shitheads just for the sake of it, otherwise I'd just appear awkward. "Social skills" is a myth that PUA artists like to perpetuate so that subhumans can pay for their expensive courses so they can "rizz up" the girls.

When I and other like me do this, we are considered to be one-dimensional and uncaring about individuals, or "see this is why you are not likeable you don't try to get to know people durhurr". But, as soon as a foid does the same thing, she is praised for "she know what she wants" or "does she need a reason to talk to you, hmmm incel".

Social skills are a meme

Normies drift through life being socially accepted, they don't have to develop 'skills' and try to fit in like an outcast

People who have to try and develop 'social skills' will generally not

Like, if you have a friend group (esp. a male, non-Western one), you often don't need 'social skills' at all: you just say shit, and people get it and reply. You don't need to stare at the other person and make histrionic gestures, they know you and can talk easily, like a no-look pass in football/soccer. Children do this easily, and it's related to why they make friends most easily. The talk about 'social skills' is meant to appeal to disconnected young-adult males, it doesn't actually describe what generally happens

Nowadays, the social scene for young people is very different anyway, with shit like social media, attention economy, foid empowerment, etc. Saying that people now have the same skills as people a century ago is too abstract to be useful. People generally navigate the society which exists, doing normie shit like flaunting their wealth or trying to mog others by associating them with socially disapproved things, and find their place in it. They don't develop skills, they fit in

If you've had to interact with normies much, it should be abundantly clear that they are often obnoxious, judgemental cunts who fiercely identify with their in-group, outside of that they don't have any real 'skills' socially even when faced with lonely people like most incels who are very willing to get along. Even if the LGBT and woke movements are at base quite autistic, and lockdowns keep people separate by force, most normies here fell in line and did not give a shit if it limits social interaction

The only people who might have 'social skills' in a proper way are psychopaths like Charles Sobhraj, who use a lot of artifice + bells & whistles in social interaction, unlike normies who simply go with the flow and identify with soyciety. But IMO that's probably more to do with how the psychopaths' minds work, they do actually identify with what they say to a surprising degree and go along for the ride even when they're deceiving others, but due to dopamine saturation etc. they can be like a chameleon even if they're heavily invested in something

When Chad tries to be himself, people respect and applaud his act to go against other people's wills, thus allows him to form his own values, and in turn, he gets even more praise for such. But as soon as sub-5 or normie does the same thing, "WTF, are you stupid or something, fucking dumbass, why would you do this, stay in your place, but you shouldn't be a doormat, SEE SEE durhurr, this why people don't take you seriously because you seek to be complacent rather than have a growth mindset:soy:".

Even when I tried to have good social skills, no one could take me serious because of my face, voice and height.

they choose to talk to you.
otherwise, i am labeled as a creep.

People's willingness to talk to you comes from looks. By having good looks you're guaranteed to have people wanting to talk to you, positive reinforcement loop and then you develop social skills.

Studying social skills will just make you more autistic because unattractive men won't get the chance to practice them.

The most important things are going to be your looks and status by far.

However social skills do matter somewhat especially for long term friendships or longer term relationships I expect. If a woman is a 10 out of 10 but an insufferable cunt I can’t see that relationship lasting for example.

But yeah doesn’t really matter if you’re ugly and low status as you won’t even get your foot in the door.

Foids the most callous in regards to personal affairs

Interaction is primarily non-verbal.
If you feel that people don't want you to be near them, or aren't attracted/interested in you, then naturally your social skills wouldn't develop.
Sometimes, you may be too different from the group to form any meaningful relationships.
For example, if you don't drink and smoke, don't watch sports, then you will have a problem to socialize within certain groups

Trying to improve one’s social skills is a waste of time and energy. The only way to cope is to accept one’s fate and avoid social interactions as much as possible.

social skill happen naturally, its experience that come from talking with ppl whom enjoy your company. u just a creep if u talk to stranger that wanna spend no time with u. its social skill that can developed at the same time required other ppl willingness

Bad personalities don't exist, people just put you in the category your appearance fits best.

I think it's cope, I used to be really socially suave, gift of the silver tongue, now I can't talk to anyone without stuttering or speaking softly and can't carry a simple everyday conversation.

foids that say he needs to improve his social skills. simply means you are ugly.

If you are non-NT, then it's over

Being able to socialize is like any other muscle, you can either work on it or never work on it. Muscles become weak just like the mind can become weak. Tho, I must say, even if you are at your peak at socializing, as in you're around your peers, have a job where you have to interact, maybe certain locations you frequent where talking is required, etc. eventually, if you lose all of that (for whatever reason), then your social skills and your social proof goes right the fuck out of the window. It's a done deal. Regaining social skills back after years or what-have-you ? Doubtful and cope. Once I lost my last friend (haven't talked to him since September after an argument), I knew that it was a done deal. I also quit my job of 10 years which required socializing, so.. I lost that as well.

Time doesn't care about you or I, just like nobody cares when you off yourself. Don't take life too seriously... it's a fucking waste of time. My braincels just don't give a shit anymore.

Social engagement-important for health and well-being-can be difficult for people with schizophrenia. Past research indicates that despite expressing interest in social interactions, people with schizophrenia report spending less time with others and feeling lonely. Social motivations and barriers may play an important role for understanding social engagement in schizophrenia.

People with schizophrenia were less likely than people without schizophrenia to have spent time with friends [t (51.04) = 2.09, P = 0.042, d = 0.51)], but not family. People with schizophrenia reported more social barriers than people without schizophrenia [F (1, 60) = 10.55, P = 0.002, ηp2 = 0.15)] but did not differ in reported social motivations. Specifically, people with schizophrenia reported more internal [t (45.75) = 3.40, P = 0.001, d = 0.83)] and conflict-based [t (40.11) = 3.03, P = 0.004, d = 0.73)] barriers than people without schizophrenia. Social barriers and motivations were related to real-world social functioning for people with schizophrenia, such that more barriers were associated with more difficulty in close relationships (r = -0.37, P = 0.027) and more motivations were associated with better community functioning (r = 0.38, P = 0.024).

CONCLUSION

These findings highlight the importance of assessing first person accounts of social barriers and motivations to better understand social engagement in schizophrenia.

The Psychiatric Risk Gene Transcription Factor 4 (TCF4) Regulates Neurodevelopmental Pathways Associated With Schizophrenia, Autism, and Intellectual Disability

Genetic variants in and around the transcription factor 4 (TCF4) gene are associated with range of disorders that are frequently associated with cognitive dysfunction.1–3 The most recent schizophrenia GWAS reported three independent single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TCF4 that surpassed the threshold for genome wide significance.4 Intriguingly, rare TCF4 single nucleotide variants (SNVs) have also been described in schizophrenia patients, although their impact on the function of the protein has not been established.5,6 In addition to the genetic studies in schizophrenia, TCF4 variants are associated with early information processing and cognitive markers, some of which are schizophrenia endophenotypes.7–10 Damaging TCF4 mutations have also been described in large-scale genotyping studies in patients with ID, neurodevelopmental disorders, and most recently ASD.11–15 Haploinsufficiency of TCF4 causes Pitt–Hopkins syndrome (PTHS); a rare form intellectual disability (ID) associated with characteristic facial features, autonomic dysfunction, and behavioral traits that resemble autism spectrum disorder (ASD).16–19 Collectively, these studies implicate TCF4 in a range of neurodevelopmental disorders.

TCF4 is a member of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family of proteins.20–22 For the purposes of disambiguation, it should be noted that TCF4 (Gene ID: 6925) described herein should not be confused with T-cell factor 4 (Gene ID: 6934, official gene symbol, TCF7L2) since they can share the same acronym. TCF4 and its paralogues, collectively known as E-proteins, interact with other bHLH proteins to regulate DNA binding specificity and transcriptional activity at promoters and enhancers that contain E-boxes (5′-CANNTG).2,20,23 The human TCF4 gene encodes multiple protein isoforms of which only the major isoforms TCF4-A and TCF4-B have been characterized in detail.24 In neurons, TCF4 regulates the intrinsic excitability of pyramidal cells of the prefrontal cortex and has been shown to attenuate neurite branching.25,26 Furthermore, haploinsufficiency of Tcf4 in mice affects gene expression and DNA methylation in the brain, leading to enhanced long-term potentiation, learning and memory deficits, and autistic-like behavior.22,25,26 By contrast, mice over-expressing Tcf4 in the brain display deficits in sensorimotor gating, fear conditioning, and circadian processes as well as impairments in attentional and behavioral anticipation.7,27

Although the function of TCF4 as transcription factor has been well established, very little is known about the genes regulated by TCF4 in neuronal cells and specifically in cells of human origin. Therefore, to gain a functional insight into the role of TCF4 in schizophrenia other neurodevelopmental disorders, we used a bespoke TCF4 antibody for chromatin immunoprecipitation and next generation sequencing (ChIP-seq) to define the genomic targets of TCF4. We found that TCF4 target genes cluster in neurodevelopmental pathways and are enriched for schizophrenia, ASD, and ID risk genes.

To determine the physiological relevance of TCF4 bound genes in SH-SY5Y cells to gene expression in the human brain, we examined the enrichment of the complete list of TCF4 targets in a number of commonly used gene sets.37,38,46 Following the rationale that genome-wide co-expression networks reflect biological processes essential to human neocortical development we mapped TCF4 targets onto co-expression modules described by Parikshak et al.46 TCF4 bound genes were enriched for modules 17 and 18 but were significantly under-represented in modules 4, 6, 12, and 14 (table 1). Module 17 contains genes involved in synaptic transmission and cation channel activity and is also enriched for ASD genes (table 1).46 Similarly, we also undertook gene set analysis on the list of targets recognized by the FMR
P RNA-binding protein and LoF intolerant genes. The targets of the FMRP-RNA binding protein and LoF intolerant genes are enriched for genes that harbor both de novo and common and risk alleles for schizophrenia and other neurodevelopmental disorders such as ASD and ID.4,36,47,48 TCF4 bound genes were also highly enriched for FMRP targets and LoF intolerant genes (OR = 1.87 and 1.42, respectively, P < 2.2 × 10−16) (table 1). Taken together these data suggest that TCF4 binds to genes in SH-SY5Y cells that are representative of neuronal gene expression pathways that regulate important neurodevelopmental cellular processes in human brain.

  • Positive symptoms: The presence of symptoms most people don’t have, such as exaggerated perceptions and ideas. Hallucinations and delusions can be so vivid that they impair a person’s ability to know what’s real and what’s not, negatively impacting their ability to care for themselves. This is sometimes called a “psychotic break.”
  • Negative symptoms: The absence of things present in most people. This includes things such as facial expressions, emotional response, and interest in the world.
  • Cognitive symptoms: Difficulties with concentration, working memory, and decision making.

Individuals with disorders that include psychotic symptoms (i.e. psychotic disorders) experience broad cognitive impairments in the chronic state, indicating a dimension of abnormality associated with the experience of psychosis. These impairments negatively impact functional outcome, contributing to the disabling nature of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and psychotic depression. The robust and reliable nature of cognitive deficits has led researchers to explore the timing and profile of impairments, as this may elucidate different neurodevelopmental patterns in individuals who experience psychosis. Here, we review the literature on cognitive deficits across the life span of individuals with psychotic disorder and psychotic-like experiences, highlighting the dimensional nature of both psychosis and cognitive ability. We identify premorbid generalized cognitive impairment in schizophrenia that worsens throughout development, and stabilizes by the first-episode of psychosis, suggesting a neurodevelopmental course.

Systemizing is genetically correlated with autism and is genetically distinct from social autistic traits

Abstract

The hypersystemizing theory of autism suggests that autistic individuals, on average, have superior attention to detail, and a stronger drive to systemize. Systemizing involves identifying input-operation-output relationships. Here, we report the results of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of systemizing measured using the Systemizing Quotient - Revised in n = 51,564 individuals. We identify three genome-wide significant loci: Two of these were significant in the non-stratified GWAS: rs4146336 on chromosome 3 (P = 2.58×10−8) and rs1559586 on chromosome 18 (P = 4.78×10−8). In addition, we also identified a significant locus in the males-only GWAS (rs8005092 on chromosome 14, P = 3.74×10−8). We find that 12%± 1.2 of the variance in systemizing is captured by SNPs (P=1.2×10−20). We identify a positive genetic correlation between autism and systemizing (rg = 0.26±0.06; P = 3.35×10−5), which is independent of genetic contribution to educational attainment. We further demonstrate that genetic risk for autism from systemizing is genetically distinct from genetic risk emerging from social autistic traits, suggesting distinct shared genetics between autism and social and non-social traits. Our results highlight the importance of considering both social and non-social autistic traits in elucidating the genetic architecture of autism.

First option easily.

If all you had is positive reinforcement all your life and people are willing to talk to you, even if you were bad people would literally train you to become a better social person. You get more shots off in the gym and there's only one way up there. On the other hand when you're ugly and have been experiencing negative reinforcement, you will not be able to get shots off in the gym because people didn't give you a chance. This will only make shit worse because the older you get you are expected to know how to socialize etc but you don't cus you lack experience due to not being able to practice with people who are willing to train you
