If we're ugly, we're the token ugly guy who's comic relief. If we work out a lot, then we're the token musclehead who's also hideous. If we're brown or a minority, we're the Apu character meant to be laughed at.

The running gag for us is that we're complete losers who never win, just to make the protagonist (anyone who mogs us) look better by default.
