But... life then... was so simple and positive. What on Earth went wrong...

I don't think you're wrong, the world was more kind back then. But that's not the natural state of the world, Man is always to be in conflict and life is meant to be difficult and miserable. People throughout history have always suffered immensely and could have been killed by anything at any time. Injustice was commonplace and expected, and we didn't 'value life' in the same way that Men do today. People were expendable.

Modernization temporarily reprieved Man of that, for the most part, but it was always bound to return desu.
