According to the New York Post, the average American wastes $18,000 a year. I don't know if that's true though, but Americans must surely be wasting money. According to Google, there's 258.3 million adults in the US. 258.3 million multiplied by $18,000 is 4,649,400 million or $4.6 trillion in other words. According to Google, "In fiscal year 2024, the federal government spent $6.8 trillion, according to USAFacts. " That means if we taxed an additional $4.6 trillion, the government can increase its budget by 67%; however perhaps people should have some money to waste. If we tax the average American an additional $9,000 the government can gain $2.3 trillion. That's about 34% of the current budget.

According to a webpage, "Only 1.49 million Americans, a small fraction of taxpayers, reported enough income to crack the top 1% in 2021, according to SmartAsset." "The SmartAsset study found it takes $787,712 to be in the top 1% of earners." I don't know how much they are taxed currently but 500 million times 1.49 is 745 million, an increase in money. The top 0.1% and 0.01% can be taxed even more. Perhaps there is a problem that some wealthy people would immigrate to elsewhere and take their businesses with them because taxes are so high, but I dunno. There is a problem with taxing the rich because some of the top political donors are Republican. I'm a Republican.

I think I did the math wrong. It's 1.49 million times 500,000 is 745 billion.
