Patrick Daniel Tillman (November 6, 1976 – April 22, 2004) was a professional American Football player in the National Football League (NFL) who left a promising sports career and enlisted in the United States Army in June 2002 in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.
While on a mission in 2004, Pat's platoon is divided into two teams, with Pat in Serial 1 and Kevin, his brother who also enlisted with Pat, five minutes behind in Serial 2. Serial 2 is ambushed. Pat Tillman and others climb a hill to provide cover for Serial 2. Serial 2 arrives; soldiers in the first vehicle mistake Tillman's squad for the enemy and open fire. Tillman waves his arms and yells, "Cease fire! Friendlies!" to no avail. He sets off a smoke grenade. He and an Afghan soldier are killed. His brother Kevin, in the last vehicle in Serial 2, arrives on the scene minutes later, and about a half hour later he is told Pat was killed -- he presumes by the enemy.
Army tells Tillman's family he was killed by enemy fire while engaging an enemy machine gun emplacement, and died an hour later at an Army field hospital. An investigation concluded in 2007 that Tillman was killed by friendly fire and the incident was covered up.
So, to recap, this guy gave up a lucrative and promising NFL career to go be a worthless grunt in the military, enthusiastically volunteered for patrols, and was rewarded by getting killed by his own men, which subsequently lied about it, and the truth only came out years later.
It's hard to dislike this guy. Good guy Chad says "fuck you" to being an NFL millionaire, to go fight on the frontlines in some shit hole just to get killed by his own retarded comrades. Disliking this guy just because he was a Chad is an autistic cope, he's a bonafide hero.
