Yes it was real. Gamergate started out as a controversy about some foid developer fucking gaming journos in exchange for positive reviews for her shitty visual novel but quickly spiraled out of control into a full blown internet war between older apolitical members of the internet and newer left-leaning normie internet users. In a way it never really ended, we're still living in the fallout of it.
