ITT we discuss our favourite war films and rank them.

My top 4:
1. Full Metal Jacket
2. Das Boot
3. Dr Strange Love
4. Dunkirk

I got inspired to make the thread because I just saw Das Boot last night and i was really impressed! I was nervous going in because of the long run time, but it earnt its entire run time and never got stale, which is saying a lot coming from me because my attention span is completely fucked lol. But yeah its a super gritty film, and has a great ending, it kind of gives you the impression the director was trying to fuck with the audience as much as possible.

Still all this considered it doesn't surpass FMJ IMO, that film is just too iconic and memorable and its a surprisingly casual watch too, at least compared to the others. Cheers Lads

never got into it tbh, maybe the directors cut was just bad, but i found it kind of slow, still if you like it that's great :smonk:

just watched a trailer, looks cool mang, will have to check it out properly sometime :feelzez:

I guess my favourite would be FMJ
I cant think of many others rn

Theres a film I want to watch about the Chechen war its called purgatory but theres no English translation I can find
Its on youtube but Auto correct is the equivalent of someone whos genuinely brain damaged beyond repair so its useless

From What Ive seen the effects Are somewhat bad But enough to bring together The image of what actually happened In the war
Some of the acting is a bit bad too but Aslong as the entire film isnt boring then Idc
It seems like It could be a Gritty Blackpilled film

watched it all, looks gritty as fuck yeah, something about the shitty camara quality of low budget older films, just give such a nasty, grimy feel :dafuckfeels:

Because the Dirlewanger Brigade in Belarus handed over bundles of flowers and ice cream to local villagers
The soldiers depicted in the movie aren't Dirlewanger's brigade. That's just one interpretation based off the fact that the brigade was active in Belarus.

Looking at their uniforms, they seem to be a strange mishmash of SS, SD, regular Heer, Russian ROA and Hiwi troops, which I think was intentional on the part of the filmmakers to show the audience all nazi-fascists were ultimately the same genocidal maniacs no matter was branch or unit they served in . Also, the Soviet partisans were not the folk heroes they are portrayed as, they were just as brutal and massacred entire villages if they suspected them of collaborating with the Germans.

Its genuinely so annoying I cant find it with the translation

Despite the low quality it looks like the exact type of war film Id want to watch and I don’t normally watch that many
No romanisation No sugarcoating Just the Reality of war
It doesn’t seem like they frame anyone as being particularly good either which is realistic

In a war like that most people become like animals

the Soviet partisans are not portrayed as heroes in the movie either. I mean, the whole movie is about how the main character, wanting to be a hero, ends up witnessing the reality of war instead of being a badass action guy and is pathetic and powerless, contrast this with other Soviet war movies like White Sun of the Desert. There's a reason as to why the Soviet government was iffy about releasing the movie until Gorby came along.

yeah that's a feature of a lot of the best war films, Das Boot was really good in that regard. good luck with finding it bro, i searched it on chatgpt out of the suggestions it gave it seems buying a physical copy off the internet is the easiest way to get it.
