I was pretty good at math in high school and got a 5 on AP Calculus BC my freshman year. My teachers asked me to take the AMC and I managed to qualify for the AIME a couple times in high school, but I never got more than one-third of the questions correct. It is insanely hard. So these ricecels are brutal IQ moggers. You have to be insanely smart to even qualify for the U.S. Math Olympiad, let alone the International Math Olympiad.
It's also inaccurate that the U.S. has never won the IMO more than once in the last 30 years. Team USA won gold in 2015, 2016, and 2018 I think. Need to double check though.

i liked math up until the point i started studying diff eq, lagrange multipliers, and multiple integrals and i just fucking hated it because it just felt far too abstract at that point. i mean, it was useful for some econ that i dabbled in during undergrad but yeah, my interest just went from 100 to 0 in the course of a couple years

Aren't I a failure if I ended up here anyways? I did at least major in math, and probably am better at it than >95% of the population. But once you go to university you end up realizing how IQ-dependent doing well in pure math is.
Applied math is much easier, of course, and that's what I ended up doing a lot more of.
