In Canada you need a landlord reference if you want to move into a new place, and if you don't have a good landlord reference you're basically fucked. They also do a credit check and look at your financial statements before taking you as a tenant.

My roomate is causing problems but doesn't give a fuck, im worried my landlord will give me a shit reference in assosication with him so I'm trying to show im not like my roommate, including buying him bottles of wine and shit. UNIRONICALLY have to tip my landlord so he doesn't tank my reference when eventually need a new place.

I don't pay 4k a month, that was just an example for my argument, I was using it as a hypothetical.

They need documentation, it's not easy to check. They also often ask for offical bank statements directly from your banking provider and there's no way around that.
