The writing is straight up garbage. You can tell the creator has never read a single real book in his life, it's all cringy tumblr tier dialogue and cheap emotional bait. The "twist" isn't even clever, it's just lazy intentional obfuscation instead of actual proper foreshadowing like a skilled writer would do.

Objectively the game is bad in so many ways and derivative as fuck in others, but the low-brow midwit audience of this medium eats that cheap slop up like it's the peak of storytelling.

Undertale is Isekai for westerners: Chara wants to GTFO of and eradicate human/nt/ZOG society, so Chara attempts sui but ends up being dropped into a whole other world, then then Chara makes a plan to martyr their soul so that their best friend can become a god and wipe out humanity, but since the monsters know not the evils of the human world, and have grown up in innocence and blissful naivety, they fail to muster up the hatred needed to take action, and die as a result.

If Chara wasn't a foid, then Chara would've been one of the saints.

Undertale for the most part is a fangame of Earthbound (Mother 2), which is a classic RPG from NES era. Why? Toby Fox was an Earthbound modder way before Undertale was a thing.

Tbh I don't think the game is supposed to be taken seriously, since half of it is just a bunch of shitposts (just like in Earthbound). It is written for the most part like a baby game, which Earthbound literally is.

Considering the game was written and coded by a single guy who barely knows the basics of programming, it was well above expectations. He made sure to code a reaction or consequence for killing basically any named enemy, which was more than any AAA studio bothered to do at the time.

Furthermore, not even Toby Fox likes the tumblr gay furry congregation that is his fanbase.

TL;DR: Undertale is the way it is because of Earthbound. You would probably hate it for the same reasons if you tried it.
