Eh, government just wants their money, I guess.
If everyone was taxed equally based on road usage, the government's income would still decline as the pivot to electric occurred, unless the road tax rose in accordance (if this were implemented, a sharp increase in road tax would also draw controversy).
I'm not defending it, though. I don't think the government should attempt to charge people so heavily just for transportation, especially when doing so involves mass surveillance to track the distance each person travels.
Maybe in your country, but in Germany EVs are selling VERY BADLY.
I remember my father telling me about some statistics which highlighted that.
Despite all of the incentives, which are all paid for by the taxpayer anyway, barely anyone is buying EVs.
Despite the best efforts to gaslight people into it, most people are still too smart and won't invest in a dead end.
For short distance travel I would recommend a good old, naturally aspired gasoline engine.
For long distance travel either a turbo charged GDI engine or a turbo charged diesel engine depending on the amount of kms per year.
But even then, diesels cost way more.
In my case, I went for a turno charged GDI engine with small displacement.
The engine and turbo charger warm up fast enough before I hit the Autobahn and then I can push it.
All I have to do is change the oil and filter twice a year with my annual mileage and I am good.
Since I only drive long distances mine should last longer.
A diesel just wasn't feasible for me, given my annual mileage.
