You have to think of it from a genetic perspective.
This guy managed to breed. Clearly his behavior is "successful" and he'll have passed those genes right down to those kids, who will pass it down to their kids, and so on. Same for the foid. She could have chosen anyone, she chose the type of guy who puts his own children in a cage and starves them. Just like intelligence, behavior has a major genetic component as well.
Wanting to defend the kids is just supporting them (their genetics) all over again.
